Eucharist is given for the first time to our second graders usually on the first weekend of May. Preparation begins in the first grade. Please contact Mrs. Curtis for details. Adults receive first communion and confirmation within the same celebration wherein they are baptized. These are the sacraments of initiation. Holy Communion is brought to the sick every week by Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist. The pastor visits on a less frequent basis.
First Communion The determination of readiness to receive the Sacrament of the Eucharist for the first time is a primary responsibility of the pastor as well as the child's parents and/or guardian. Normally children are prepared for reception of the Eucharist during second grade in their parish schools and CCD classes. Before receiving their first Holy Communion the children must be instructed in and receive the Sacrament of Penance. Guidelines for Receiving Holy Communion Catholics fully participate in the celebration of the Eucharist when they receive Holy Communion. Catholics are encouraged to receive Communion devoutly and frequently. In order to be properly disposed to receive Communion, participants should not be conscious of grave sin, and normally should have fasted for one hour. The Eucharist Fast The regulation for fasting is considered a means of spiritual preparation for receiving the Eucharist and a sign of reverence for the Sacrament. The Eucharist Fast is limited to one hour before actually receiving the Eucharist. It pertains to all solid food and all drinks, except for water. Taking medicine does not break the fast. Those who are sick, in hospitals - even if not confined to bed - and those caring for the sick, may receive communion even if they have taken food during the previous hour.
