Frequently

Asked

Questions

Q:        Who will be asked to support Forward in Faith?

A:        Every Catholic household in the Archdiocese of Washington will be asked for their prayerful consideration of a gift to the campaign.

Q:        How are parishes asked to participate?

A:        Currently, St. Edward’s is participating in the campaign during Block I with approximately 40 other parishes in the Archdiocese.  Eventually, Forward in Faith will involve the support of all parishes.  Each parish’s participation will be based on five principles: (1) Personal visitation, (2) proportionate giving (3) phased approach, (4) pledged commitments, and (5) prayer.

Q:        How will St. Edward’s meet our own needs?

A:        Every parish in the Archdiocese is being asked to participate in this campaign, but because St. Edward’s has vital funding needs of its own, we are being allowed to keep a majority of the funds raised for our own parish through a Combined Campaign.

Q:        Why a Combined Campaign?

A:        A Combined Campaign will allow us to fulfill our obligation to the needy people of our Archdiocese while at the same time, allow us to raise significant funds for our own parish.  We can avoid having to conduct an additional separate capital campaign later on, and use the momentum of the Forward in Faith campaign to immediately raise funds for our own building needs.

Q:        How much of the funds raised will go directly back to St. Edward’s?

A:        The total goal for St. Edward’s is $1.5 million. The Archdiocese will receive 1/3 of this, while St. Edward’s will receive 2/3 of all funds from the very beginning. Once the $500,000 Archdiocesan goal is achieved, St. Edward’s will retain 100% of all subsequent funds raised.

Q:        How is Forward in Faith different from the Cardinal’s Appeal?

A:        The Cardinal’s Appeal provides necessary annual operating support for agencies, pastoral ministries, and education programs throughout the Archdiocese.  Forward in Faith will raise money for specific capital and endowment needs that will fortify key programs as our Catholic population continues to grow.  This campaign will construct needed facilities and establish new programs to respond to the changing dynamics of our Catholic family.

Q:        When will the projects at St. Edward’s begin?

A:        The architects retained to design the facilities plan estimated the minimum cost for all the construction to be $1.5 million.  75% - just over $1 million – needs to be collected to begin construction. It will take a few years for the pledges from this campaign to accumulate to that level; however, certain individual components of the plan – construction of the Parish Center, for example – will begin much sooner.

Q:        Will the funds for Forward in Faith be separated from any other Archdiocesan accounts? Will they be protected?

A:        Yes to both. Those funds provided to the Forward in Faith campaign not returning to St. Edward’s will remain separate and distinct from current Archdiocesan Funds.  Campaign funds will be deposited into the Forward in Faith portion of a separate 501(c)3 charitable organization and protected from lawsuits.  Funds given to the campaign will only be used for the purposes outlined in the Forward in Faith goals and objectives.

Q:        Is St. Edward’s responsible for redeeming pledges?

A:        No.  One of the principal benefits of conducting a Combined Campaign is the Archdiocese of Washington will handle the entire pledge redemption process and will distribute funds to us on a quarterly basis beginning 6 months after the campaign at St. Edward’s ends.

Q:        Why is an initial payment of 10% of the total pledge requested? Is it required?

A:        Forward in Faith asks for an initial payment to begin a pledge.  It helps the campaign by increasing its primary cash reserves (which will be deposited in an interest bearing account), and makes sure that St. Edward’s will receive funds sooner.  Many donors actually prefer to begin their pledges immediately.  Some may even give more than the 10% requested.  However, an initial payment of 10% is not required.  A donor may elect to give less or nothing at all to begin a pledge.

Q:        To whom should an initial payment check be made out?

A:        Payments may be made payable to Forward in Faith.

Q:        Am I able to pay my pledge using a credit card or through automatic withdrawal from my checking account?

A:        Yes.  A donor may fulfill a pledge using a credit card or through electronic funds transfer from a checking account.  The donor simply completes an authorization form with the required information.  Each donor will have an option to make these types of payments when he or she receives the first statement from the Archdiocese.

Q:        To what extent are gifts to Forward in Faith tax deductible?

A:        Gifts to the campaign are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.
